Amar and Prem are two rivals who belonging to middle-class families with no scope of future advancement. Both individually, without the knowledge of the other decide to take matters into their hands and find ways to get rich quickly. Chaos and acrimony result when both find each other at loggerheads when both arrive to win the hand of the daughter of multi-millionaire Ram Gopal Bajaj amidst considerable upheavals when Shyam, the twin brother of Ram, decides to do away with Ram and assume his identity and thus take over the estate of the Bajaj family.

- When Salman Khan is asked whether he has seen the movie Sholay (1975), he says "Haan, dus baar (yes, ten times)", Amir Khan jokingly says "Iske baap ne likhi hai" (his father has written it). This is true. Salman Khan's father Salim Khan was one of the co-writers of the 1975 block buster "Sholay".
- The movie performed poorly at the box office upon its release, but has since gathered a cult following.
- This movie was first of its kind of comedy in Bollywood where humour is generated using movie references, cult references and also use of real names.
- Actor 'Shehzad' paid a unique tribute to his father Ajit, a legendary villain, by adopting his mannerisms and voice for the negative character played in this movie.
- Both Aamir and Salman's previous movies are referenced in the movie through a song. When Aamir is cutting the ribbon in prison, the song played in the background, 'Papa Kehte Hain', is from his earlier hit film From "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak" (1988). - Mehmood's character owns a film studio called "Wah Wah Productions". This is a reference to Mehmood's earlier film "Pyaar Kiye Jaa" (1966), where he plays a person who has his own film production company also called "Wah Wah Productions".

He further added that the distributors weren't sure about getting the delivery of the film and yet the release date of the film were already announced. Hence, no posters of the film were put up because the makers were worried that if they didn't have the prints on time, the public would kill them.

Actor Jagdeep who plays the character Bankeylal Bhopali in the film has earlier played the role of Bhopali in films like Soorma Bhopali and Sholay.

When Salman's character Prem finds out that Uncle and Teja are twins, he says it's like the film Seeta Aur Geeta and Aamir's character Amar corrects him saying that it's like the film Ram Aur Shyam and not Seeta Aur Geeta. Interestingly, the Hema Malini-starrer Seeta Aur Geeta was inspired by another version of Ram aur Shyam which in itself was a remake of a South film. Salman's name as Prem had become popular with Maine Pyaar Kiya and he carried it forward in Andaz Apna Apna too.
- Aamir Khan was offered the film on the sets of another Rajkumar Santoshi film, Damini (1993). Aamir Khan made a cameo in that film, and shortly after, he and Santoshi, along with Rishi Kapoor (who at the time may have somehow been involved in the film) discussed Andaz Apna Apna, which Santoshi was beggining work on. Aamir then accepted to be a part of the it.

Andaz Apna Apna Movie Mistakes
- During the scene where Salman and Aamir meet in the lodge, after Aamir gets released from jail, Aamir asks Salman how he is. Salman replies "Tip Top" but the visual looks like he doesn't say anything at all.
- Salman Khan's hairstyle keeps changing throughout the film as it was in making for 3 years, In many scenes he has long hair of Saajan Days while in some scenes he has the short hair he had during HAHK days
- In the climax when Aamir tells Crime master Gogo more about his childhood expression, Gogo in a long shot holding a gun on his right hand happily shouts to everyone about what others were thinking about him. A close-up is followed afterwards and it is visibly clear that Gogo is holding the same gun on his left hand without revealing why and how.
- In the scene where Anand Akela shows Prem his token for the interview, Prem places it on the table. All three characters are shown to move away at the end of the scene, but Anand doesn't pick his token back. He reveals much later that he has given up hope of marriage to Raveena, but its only after their attempt to foil the plans of other hopefuls.
- When Robert accidentally strikes Bhalla with an "iron bar", you can clearly see it bend on impact.
