  • The helicopter crash scene was the last to be shot, just in case any of the cast members got injured, and filming was delayed.
  • Margot Robbie revealed at San Diego Comic-Con International 2016 that although the cast members of the squad had extensive rehearsals together, she and Jared Leto did not rehearse prior to filming their scenes. She and director David Ayer felt it added to the unpredictability and madness of Harley Quinn and The Joker.
  • The majority of the cast and crew got the tattoo "SKWAD" in honor of this film. The tattoos were even applied by some of the cast members, Margot Robbie and Will Smith.
  • When perfecting the Joker's laugh, Jared Leto publicly tried different laughs in New York City and Toronto to see which ones made people the most uncomfortable.
  • To prepare for his role as Deadshot, Will Smith shaved his head, and spent time training with Navy S.E.A.L.s and Army Rangers, practicing firing a Glock 9mm handgun and an AR-15 rifle. Smith turned out to be a quick learner, particularly with long distance shots using the AR-15.
  • During Deadshot's "dossier" sequence at the start of the film, the list of weapons with which he is deadly includes the potato cannon.
  • Tom Hardy was originally cast as Rick Flag, but dropped out to do The Revenant (2015). Hardy had previously played Bane in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), who was a former member of the Suicide Squad in the comic books. Hardy later expressed his regret at leaving the role, given that he did not want to lose the work.
  • Ryan Gosling was sought out first for the role of The Joker. He reportedly turned down the role because he did not want to sign on for a multi-picture deal that the studio was requiring.
  • Jared Leto got so immersed in playing The Joker that he wouldn't break out of character on set even when he wasn't filming. He even sent his fellow cast members "Joker-like" presents: a live rat to Margot Robbie, and bullets to Will Smith, a soiled Playboy magazine to Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and a dead hog, anal beads, and used condoms for the whole crew. Scott Eastwood commented that Leto frightened him at times with his behavior, and Smith mentioned that he actually never met the real Leto.
  • Margot Robbie began training six months prior to shooting Suicide Squad (2016). Her training routine included gymnastics, boxing, weapons training, aerial silk training, and learning to hold her breath underwater for extended periods of time.
  • Margot Robbie kept the live rat that Jared Leto sent her and she even gave it a name; "Rat-Rat", she added "If Harley got something from Joker, she'd probably cherish it", she told E! Magazine.
  • Harley Quinn wields an umbrella that is red and black, which is the original color scheme for her outfit from Batman: The Animated Series (1992), which is seen in the film during Harley Quinn's back story where she and the Joker are dancing.   • In May 2016, Warner Brothers announced Margot Robbie would reprise her role as Harley Quinn in an upcoming Gotham City Sirens, which she would also produce.
  • Jared Leto shaved his eyebrows in order to play The Joker, to make him look more deranged and psychotic. Jay Hernandez, who plays El Diablo, also shaved his eyebrows for his role, since his character was designed to have no hair on his body. For Hernandez, the choice saved him half an hour a day in the make-up chair.

  • A bar scene with Harley taking everyone's orders was featured in several trailers but was edited for the theatrical release. In the scene, Deadshot calls for a shot, Katana wants whiskey, Croc and Boomerang settle for beer, Harley asks what Diablo wants, and he prefers water which she jokes, "is a good idea". In the finished film, it cuts directly to speech about them all almost pulling the mission off. It is added into the extended cut of the film, with extra dialogue from Deadshot and Diablo.
  • To prepare for his role as the Joker, Jared Leto watched hours of real crime footage on YouTube until he couldn't watch anymore. His reasoning was to understand how calm and deliberate a criminal can be and apply that to the character.
  • The Batmobile chase scene with Batman pursuing Harley Quinn and Joker was originally longer, with more interaction between Joker and Harley. One of the examples, presented in all the trailers, is the Joker punching the roof of his car.
  • Waylon Jones, a.k.a. Killer Croc has only eight lines of dialogue in the movie, totaling sixty-four words.

Olivia Thirlby, Imogen Poots, Alison Brie, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, Emma Watson, Emily Browning, Zooey Deschanel, Lily Collins, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Sara Paxton, Amanda Seyfried, and Evan Rachel Wood were also considered for the role of Harley Quinn.
  • The Enchantress is the name of villainous characters in both DC and Marvel Comics, who coincidentally both wield magic and are clothed in green. The Enchantress of Marvel is a rival of Thor, while DC's is not primarily an antagonist on any one hero. In this film, she has been completely re-designed in order to look unique.
  • Joker tells Harley that he has some grape soda waiting for her. Harley drank grape soda in one of her most famous comic books, Paul Dini's Mad Love, as she waited for Batman to wake up to kill him.
  • Jai Courtney was reported as saying, "I'll never be in a comic book movie." He changed his mind after finding out David Ayer was to direct and produce this film.
  • Jared Leto tore his labrum (a piece of fibrocartilage (rubbery tissue) attached to the rim of the shoulder socket that helps keep the ball of the joint in place) while performing a stunt for this film.
  • Within three weeks of the teaser trailer being released, it racked up more views than both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) trailers.
  • The dead pig that Jared Leto sent the cast is actually seen when they're doing the feeding sessions to the inmates as they drop the dead pig into Killer Croc's cell. It was later confirmed that this was the actual pig that was sent that was used in the film. In the extended cut of the film, David Ayer has a cameo as the guard who drops the pig into Killer Croc's cell.
  • Margot Robbie spent over three hours in the make-up chair to be transformed into Harley Quinn. She had to have her skin painted white, apply twenty temporary tattoos, apply Harley Quinn's wig, and get into costume.
  • Just like his preparation to portray Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club (2013), Jared Leto shaved his entire body (except his head) to play the Joker.
  • Cara Delevingne uses an American accent to play Dr. June Moone, but in order to play her dark side (the Enchantress), she used her natural English accent.

She was asked to read the part in several different ways, in order to reflect June Moone's split personality. By the end of the audition, she was ready to beat people up: "David Ayer sparked a fury in me, you got to come get me out of jail because I was so furious!"
  • Belle Reve Penetentiary is the headquarters of the Suicide Squad. "Belle Reve" is misspelled French for "beautiful dream."
  • Writer Paul Dini, who created Harley Quinn in Batman: The Animated Series (1992), said he found her look optimistic and promising.
  • David Ayer described this film as a "comic book version of The Dirty Dozen (1967)."
  • Margot Robbie said about playing Harley Quinn, "I guess it's intimidating, because there's obviously a lot of people I want to please, and a character I have to do justice, but it's a challenge. But then he added with a devilish grin", "I don't think they should have eaten the cupcakes", he quipped, "I also wrote everyone a poem as well", Leto said adding, "It helped me think about who they were and kind of created this illusion of a relationship and make the circumstances a little more realistic". Leto then teased, "The funny thing about the gifts, is no one has actually talked about the craziest stuff, I did get thank you notes for some of the gifts" Leto boasted, "I'm not going to say who or what, or what specific gift was thanked, but there were a lot", "Joker likes to share his toys."
  • Scenes of Rick Flag and June Moon's romantic relationship, including him reading the files of the Suicide Squad recruits after Waller delivers them to him and a scene of Flag and Moon out on a date, were removed from the final cut.
  • David Ayer penned an open letter in January 2017 in response to a fan's enthusiasm for the film. "I know it's a controversial film, I really tried to make something different, with a look and a voice of its own. I took inspiration from the insanity of the original comics. Making a movie is a journey, not a straight line. I learned so much. People want what they want, and everyone has a personal vision of how each character should look and walk and talk. If you set out to make a mass appeal movie, it's easy to end up with vanilla. But I went for it. And I know Squad has its flaws, Hell, the World knows it. Nothing hurts more than to pick up a newspaper and see a couple years of your blood, sweat and tears ripped to shreds. The hate game is strong out there. The movie was wildly successful commercially. And the World got introduced into some very cool characters in the DC Universe. And that success is due exactly to the wonder and power of DC, of its characters. Would I do a lot of things different? Yep, for sure. Wish I had a time machine. I'd make Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story. I have to take the good and bad and learn from it. I love making movies and I love DC. I'm a High School dropout and used to paint houses for a living. I'm lucky to have the job I have. I have to give the characters the stories and plots they deserve next time. Real talk. (And no, there isn't a secret edit of the film with a bunch of Joker scenes hidden in a salt mine somewhere.)"
  • Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis, Kerry Washington, and Octavia Spencer were all front runners for the role of Amanda Waller before Davis was cast.

  • Blake Lively turned down the role of June Moone, a.k.a. Enchantress, due to scheduling conflicts with The Shallows (2016). Moreover, and similarly, for Smith's Suicide Squad, released in the same year, which has one tagline that states, "Worst. Heroes. Ever.", the first draft was: "The movie Will Smith did instead of Independence Day 2".
  • To prepare for her role as Harleen Quinzel, a.k.a. Harley Quinn, Margot Robbie stated in an interview, "I ended up looking into MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) testings. It's a test that psychologists use to determine what mental illness people might have. It's a list of five hundred questions or something. Whenever we had time to rehearse or improvise, or even in the scenes, I'd just start with those questions. Some of them are basic, and some of them are not. I'd see which ones would catch him off guard, how he'd react, and I'd be like, 'OK, I'm gonna go for this tactic now. It's a lot of trial and error. It's kinda like when your friend is doing something stupid in a relationship, and you're just so frustrated. You're like 'What are you doing? Why?' I landed upon co-dependency as the tact to take. It's like a compulsion, I suppose. When you start looking at it the way an alcoholic is compelled, you know, needs to have a drink. You think of it in those terms, like it's an actual psychological problem, which co-dependency actually is."
  • Karen Fukuhara (Katana) revealed for her audition "I remember the room wasn't very big, and they had big photo lights on either side of me. During my sword-fighting portion of the audition, I tried to calculate my arm's length and the sword's length so I wouldn't hit those things. But it was cutting it really close, and when you're in the zone, you can't really be careful because you're going all out. I hit one of the lights, and I remember hearing the casting director and David gasp. But I just kept going with it, and I think that's what David liked, that I didn't stop in the middle."
  • In response to the fake rumors about his method acting for the Joker, Jared Leto disclosed in an interview "There's so much hype and so much bullshit around that. I think it's just a fun thing to talk about and, you know, even when the movie came out there was so much misrepresentation about what went down. About the method acting crap. 90% of it wasn't even true and it just takes on a life of its own. It was an incredible experience, everyone was amazing... but everything's great in that world and I'm really proud to be a part of it."

  • In a recent interview, Margot Robbie revealed that she received multiple death threats for taking on the role of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. The actress wishes that somebody would have taken her aside to clue her in on the risks of taking on such a massive role. Robbie had to learn as she navigated her new-found success, which includes learning the price of a background check for a person that just threatened her life. She had this to say. "You're about to be in a comic book film; now here's the worst-case scenario of how big and scary it can get. There's just all this stuff you learn along the way, like, when you get those death threats, it's (smart) to have a security team do a background check on whoever sent them to see if there is any past history of violence because you'll need to know whether you need security to go to certain events. And every time you do a background check, it's going to cost $2,000, so take that into consideration when you're getting yourself into this ,and it's like, 'OK, that's a different kind of career.' Because then you need to always do a job that can financially support that lifestyle. You can't just do indie films for the rest of your life because that film back there changed everything and now you have to be able to afford security. I just wish someone had explained a lot of those things to me early on. I wouldn't have resented the position I found myself in because I would've known what I was getting myself into."
  • The scene of the Joker interrogating Captain Griggs, including the line, "I can't wait to show you my new toys", was in several trailers, but was removed from the final cut.
  • In creating the look of the Joker, Jared Leto was inspired heavily by David Bowie, specifically by his "Thin White Duke" persona. He also spoke with Grant Morrison, a famed DC writer who has often written the Joker as resembling the rock star. Morrison has even given him Bowie's trademark dilated pupil.
  • On July 11, 2015, the first trailer for this film was shown at Comic Con 2015. Warner Brothers did not intend the trailer to be widely seen, but later relented, and publicly released the trailer a few days later.

  • Deadshots "wrist magnums" were built from Glock 19 pistols. The props used in the film were designed and custom made by Walter Klassen FX and Movie Armaments Group (this included "design work, CAD renderings, machining, assembly, finishing and powder coating"). New CNC-machined frames were created for the the Glock 19s and the magazine release and ejection of the one mounted to Smith's right wrist were reversed so that the casings would be able to eject upwards. The blank-firing wrist guns were fully automatic, fired via a thumb trigger connected to a system involving air tubes, a pneumatic actuator, and regulated CO2 canisters hidden in the holstered Glock 18s on Smith's back. According to Walter Klassen FX employee Taku Dazai, firing them created a "rooster tail of fire" and a "huge plume of fire", plus they "sound insane". They are chambered in 9x19mm, due to the fact that they can be seen loaded with the magazines from Deadshot's Glock 18s.

  • David Ayer stated in an interview the story behind Captain Boomerangs fetish for pink unicorn he revealed that the unicorn plushie was originally a set decoration piece in the John F. Ostrander Federal Building. "[Pinky] was actually intended to be a piece of set decoration in one of our office building sets," he said. "I thought [Boomerang] needed a little something kind of fun and silly and it kept appearing throughout the film. It became a bit of a mascot," Ayer then explained, telling fans the unicorn was meant to represent all things George "Digger" Harkness.   • In the original DC comics, June Moone a.k.a. The Enchantress began as a superhero who appeared almost exclusively in back-up features. One of them, "Six-One", is shot down by Enchantress' minions, and another Chinook, the aforementioned "Savior One-Zero", was the extraction for the Task Force, but is hijacked by The Joker before it can do so. A Hughes 500, standing in for an MH-6 Little Bird, carries Colonel Flag into the Midway City airport base to meet with his new team. A pair of AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters attempt to kill Incubus during his initial breakout in Midway City with their M230 30mm chain guns, but are destroyed themselves. Of these, all but the Apaches are operated exclusively by the elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.
  • According to Jay Hernandez, WB heads were uncomfortable with El Diablo killing his family and wanted to change it. Hernandez had to fight with them to keep that history.

Suicide Squad Movie Mistakes

  • Just before Incubus knocks a HMMWV onto him, a US soldier is seen firing at Incubus with his M4 carbine, but there is no sound for the undoubtedly loud gunfire.
  • When introducing the squad, Killer Croc's activity report states he was over seven feet tall at his latest incarceration, although throughout the movie he is near the same height as everyone else.
  • When a car arrives at a building, Waller's bodyguards are egregiously deficient. As she exits her vehicle a guard armed with an automatic rifle allows her to cross in front of him, blocking his view and putting his primary in a potential crossfire. Moments later she approaches a door flanked by two similarly armed guards, both of whom turn their back on the threat zone to open the door for Waller--who is perfectly capable of opening a door for herself. These are both major breaches of bodyguard protocol.
  • Jared Leto's real tattoos are visible in multiple scenes. Most notably, the triad logos on both of his forearms are seen through the shirt during the strip club scene.
  • In Captain Boomerang's Activity Report being presented by Amanda Waller at the beginning of the movie, the first line of the second paragraphs calls him "Hawkness" instead of "Harkness". Elsewhere in the report, the name "Harkness" appears correctly.

After the camera cuts to a close up of one faceless soldier, it cuts to back to Deadshot where Harley Quinn walks up behind him and then rests her hand on his shoulder.
  • In the airport dressing scene, Harley is clearly wearing fishnet tights. Less than thirty seconds later in the same scene, her legs are bare. The tights appear and disappear throughout the remainder of the film.
  • The color saturation and styling of Harley Quinn's hair changes drastically and inexplicably between scenes. Most notably, when the squad is given their equipment and clothing to change from their prison garb, her hair is suddenly smooth, curled on the ends and the colored ends seem to be much brighter. Later, after the battle in the rainstorm when dried, her hair is once again curled neatly at the ends of the pigtails. This is physically impossible without styling.
  • The trajectory of the gun that Deadshot is thrown by Harley Quinn is not consistent between the shot of the gun in the air and the shot in which Deadshot catches it.

  • Military-grade explosives do not explode when shot at; they require a blasting cap to be set off. This is a safety feature of such materials. Deadshot would know this with his expertise.
  • Enchantress steals a top secret document from the Iranian government, but its pages are bound on the left side, which is the wrong side for texts written in Farsi.
  • When Deadshot is practicing with weapons while still being incarcerated, no one is wearing hearing protection. This is required in any facility where firearms are shot, and it surely should have been enforced in a government-run prison facility of all places.
  • Harley is a psychiatrist, which means she completed both medical school (8 years of undergraduate and medical studies) and a residency in psychiatry (another 4 years). Not only that, she was competent and experienced enough to be allowed to treat high-risk criminals like the Joker, hinting at a reputation that she must have worked to build for some time. Plus she's been a part of the Joker's gang for at least ten years, since she was mentioned as an accomplice in Robin's death, which took place that long ago - and yet she's twenty-six. This is possibly justified. Joker doesn't appear to have aged much either since they met, and Harley regularly displays abilities that few normal humans, let alone ones with no training, which may imply that the acid they fell into changed their physiology. Similarly, Enchantress' human host has a Ph D (given she's referred to as Dr. June Moone), another process that takes several years to achieve, and only after completing at least one postgraduate degree. It is fairly possible to have achieved a doctorate by your late twenties, depending on your field, but an archaeology Ph D in the United States typically takes about a decade to complete. And June's played by Cara Delevingne, who in real life was twenty-three at the time of filming and only a year or two older than most new college graduates (depending on how long an undergraduate degree takes to complete).
  • The HMMWVs being used by the Military in their unsuccessful attempt to 'contain' Incubus at Midway City all seem to be the early, unarmored M1025/M1026 versions, as distinguished by the distinctive X-patterned door, the absence of a proper gun turret, and the flat 'snout' of the vehicle. By the time of the film's release, these have been relegated mainly to training facilities, Military Police, or rear-echelon units; frontline combat units, even National Guard ones, are currently equipped with the up-armored M1151 Enhanced Armament Carrier version, which looks significantly different from the M1025/M1026s depicted in the film.
  • The Browning M2HB .50 caliber machine guns fitted to the HMMWVs seen in the film seem slightly smaller than their real-life counterparts, and appear to be mounted on a mount more fitting for the smaller M60 general-purpose 7.62mm machine gun.
  • It's clear that Deadshot never misses and has perfect aim that is practically superhuman. In a scene showing him performing a contract, he is bugging his client into paying him in advance, as his window of opportunity was closing fast. When he finally gets paid, he casually performs a ricochet shot on a target three kilometers away via his wrist-mounted gun rather than his, more appropriate for the situation, sniper rifle. In a demonstration of his skills to Waller for Task Force X, he uses a variety of different handguns and assault rifles and makes only one hole in each metal target and consistently hits that same hole every time. However, if he never misses with any gun, no gun is 'more appropriate' for a particular situation than any other gun.
  • Waller brags to a room full of military men that she's compromised Flag to control him. In reality, this would get them both pulled from duty, and would likely have led to charges against Waller.
  • Waller refers to Deadshot as being "most wanted". But he's in prison, so he's not wanted any more.
  • Rick Flag is ludicrously young for his rank. Maybe in 10-15 years he'd realistically expect to make Colonel.
  • When Enchantress brings the binder from the Weapons Ministry Vault in Tehran to the Chairman, he opens the book left to right. The book would be all in Persian, meaning the folder would open right to left, following Persian script. But the Chairman wouldn't necessarily know that, so he'd open it the way he's used to opening books.
  • Griggs refers to his men as guards rather than COs (corrections officers) or officers. On the sign for Belle Reve it says Special Security Barracks, a military installation. As a military installation all personnel are corrections specialists and would be referred to by their individual ranks, collectively they would be referred to as guards.
  • In Harley Quinn's file (her introduction sequence), her date of birth is listed as July 20, 1990. This would put her around 26 in 2016. The following scene has her arrest date as 10/13/14, putting her around 24. It is mentioned she is a psychiatrist prior to meeting the Joker. It takes approximately 8 years of medical study in the United States to become a psychiatrist. Unless she has an extremely high intelligence and started medical studies at only 16, this is an unrealistic time line.
  • Joker's skin and hair are the color they are as a result of being exposed to chemicals, hence why he still looks that way in Arkham. But when his hands are shown, they are flesh-colored instead of white.
  • When Harley Quinn falls from the chopper, lands on the roof, rolls and then begins running again, it is clearly a male stunt double.
  • Harley Quinn is thrown half through the windshield of the Jokermobile. The glass is broken like plate glass, while a real windshield is made of laminated glass, and does not fracture into large shards as shown.
  • When Incubus throws Deadshot into the chunks of concrete, they bounce slightly when he lands on them, indicating they are foam props.
  • After the main fight, when Waller shows up, she is holding her phone with the kill app horizontally. In the next shot, she holds it vertically. Then again horizontally in the next shot, although she does not move.
  • Enchantress fires a bolt of plasma at a surveillance satellite in low Earth orbit, which peculiarly seems to stand still waiting to be destroyed. It should be hurtling by at nearly 8 km/s (28 thousand kilometers per hour); or if supposed to be in a geostationary orbit, then it should be 36 thousand kilometers higher up.
  • Despite the fact that they were the only members wearing full restraints during the crash of the Suicide Squad's helicopter, the flight crew itself does NOT survive the crash. And this is made even more incongruous by the fact that the helicopter crashes and then rolls in a manner where its cargo area, and not flight deck, took the brunt of the impact.
  • When Deadshot has to kill a mob informant he shoots his gun which purposefully ricochets off a metal plate to kill the informant as he is walking in the hallway. As the mobster goes down there is a guard walking directly behind him. The guard would have been killed first.

What happened to GQ?

GQ (Scott Eastwood) would have been killed when he detonated the bomb. Although if the bomb was a shape charge, the blast may have been entirely upwards and away from him. Given his close proximity in a confined space, the size of the blast, and the fact he isn't seen again, it's likely he was killed.

Why does Enchantress have Amanda Waller kidnapped?

For two reasons: to claim her heart back from Waller, who kept it under lock and key as a weakness to exploit. When Waller first has June Moone reveal her abilities as Enchantress, the heart is revealed to be kept in a briefcase only Waller can open or deactivate by thumbprint with a small bomb inside that will detonate at the first sign of trouble. When Enchantress first tries to take her heart back before unleashing Incubus on Midway City, she appears in Waller's bedroom and approaches the briefcase, only to see it trigger an alarm Waller programed before falling asleep. If she'd moved closer and tried to take it, the bomb more than likely would have gone off and killed Enchantress's spirit. So she had to be clever about getting the heart back and making sure Waller couldn't do anything to hurt or permanently damage it. Also, to exploit Waller's knowledge of top secret government facilities in her rampage of destruction. Waller is revealed to a woman who makes it her business to know everyone's secrets as a way to stay on top when she needs to. When Enchantress's machine is destroying the satellites and secret military bases, people are heard asking how Enchantress is aware of these facilities. It then immediately cuts to Waller with a tube in her head pumping information into the machine.

Why did Waller kill the .....?

....staff at her headquarters? Most likely to cover her tracks, it was she who chose to try to exploit the Enchantress for espionage purposes so it was she who would ultimately be held responsible for the tragedy overcoming the city. From a cinematic point of view it demonstrated that even though she is a "good guy" she is cold-hearted and absolutely ruthless in order to achieve her goals. Especially in contrast to the squad itself.

What are the differences between the Theatrical Version and the Extended Cut?

Footage removed for censorship is nowhere to be found in the Extended Version. Contentwise, a new path has not been struck either. In other words, if you enjoyed the movie, there's a bit more for you to enjoy. If you did not like the Theatrical Version, odds are you will not be thrilled by the Extended Version either.
